TPS62400DRCT

The TPS62400DRCT is an advanced, compact synchronous step-down voltage regulator that operates from input voltages above, below, or equal to the voltage regulated. It is typically used in point-of-load (POL) power applications and is available in a 4mm x 4mm 10-pin VQFN package. The TPS62400DRCT is capable of delivering up to 8A of continuous output current (up to a 6.5V output) over a wide input supply range.

The TPS62400DRCT is a monolithic, low dropout regulator with integrated voltage reference, high-side and low-side power MOSFETs, and is capable of producing a regulated output voltage from 0.8V to 5.5V. It provides high output current capabilities and requires a minimum number of external components. It also has a low-voltage shutdown pin, adjustable soft-start, and four different output power ranges.

Working Principle

The TPS62400DRCT operates in buck, or step-down, mode, which is the most popular DC-DC converter since it can provide low output voltages with efficiency that are higher than linear regulators. It is based on the principle of field-effect transistors (FETs) switching, either through a linear regulator or a synchronous rectification.The basic buck converter schematic is shown in Figure 1.

The TPS62400DRCT integrates two power MOSFETs and a voltage reference. The power MOSFETs, which act as the switch, are controlled by an internal PWM controller. The PWM controller regulates the amount of time that the switches are closed or open allowing the inductor to store and release the energy from the input power source.

The output voltage is regulated by adjusting the duty cycle of the PWM control and the switching frequency can be changed with an external control pin. This feature allows the user to optimize the performance of the regulator for low noise, low ripple or low EMI. In addition, the device includes features such as soft start, overcurrent protection, and undervoltage protection.
