The TPS63050RMWT from Texas Instruments is a highly integrated synchronous DC/DC step-down switching regulator. It features an input voltage range of 3.2V to 16V, output voltage between 0.8V and just below the input voltage, and programmable switching frequency up to 2MHz. This highly integrated switching regulator includes 5MHz clock synchronous rectified output stage, a low power standby state mode, a low n-channel MOSFET gate drive, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown.

Working Principle

The device includes an integrated low on-resistance N-MOSFET and an internal clock synchronization circuit. An internal oscillator provides a fixed clock frequency, and the device can be synchronized to a higher frequency (up to 2Mhz) externally, using an external synchronization pin.

The TPS63050RMWT can be configured using the Soft Start feature, which regulates the timing of the MOSFET ramp up. This feature allows for the smooth turn on of the converter, avoiding inrush currents. The device also includes overcurrent protection, which is a feature that shuts down the device if the output current exceeds a minimum value.

Finally, the TPS63050RMWT features a low-battery detection that is available through the Status pin, so the microcontroller can detect the low battery state and take appropriate action.
