The TPS65030YZKR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3-V input, synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with integrated FET that operates at a 3 MHz fixed frequency. It’s part of the Power Management ICs that falls in PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear plus Switching category. This cost-effective device has an output voltage adjustable from 0.6 V up to an input voltage, with an input voltage ranging from 2.5-V up to 5.5-V. It has an accurate output voltage (±1.5%) due to On-Chip Voltage Reference. It provides short-circuit protection and hiccup mode, current limiting, and thermal shutdown protection.

Working Principle

The TPS65030YZKR operates in fixed frequency peak current-mode. It includes an integrated Power FET and two linear regulators, a pass-transistor voltage buffer, two gate drivers and an over-current limit circuit. The switching frequency is set with an external resistor. The TPS65030YZKR contains an error amplifier, feedback resistors, the power switch and a power switch gate drive. It also has an over-current limit circuit, an output voltage divider, an output voltage sensing network, an oscillator and temperature compensation components.

When the input voltage is applied, the oscillator starts to regulate the switching frequencies. The error amplifier monitors the sense voltage with respect to the reference voltage. When the sense voltage is greater than the reference, the output of the error amplifier pulls up the power switch driver, thus making the output voltage higher. If the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the output of the error amplifier pulls down the power switch driver, thus making the output voltage lower. The current limit circuit senses the output current and limits it, preventing any damage to the system.

The TPS65030YZKR also contains a number of protection features such as over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage lockout (UVLO), short-circuit protection, and over-temperature protection (OTP). These protection features prevent any damage to the system due to any over-voltage, under-voltage, excessive current or temperature conditions.
