TPS65054EVM-195 evaluation board was designed to demonstrate the performance of the TPS65054 synchronous step-down switch-mode power supply (SMPS). The two-stage, synchronous buck converter is programmed to generate a regulated 1.8 V / 2.5 A output from a 3.6 V to 6 V input. It comprises a discrete control loop which detects, conditions, and processes the signal feedback to maintain output regulation. The board demonstrates complete design flexibility with variable external resistors for output voltage control, and adjustable values for certain components to facilitate design optimization.
The evaluation board has the following features:

Understanding the working principle of the board helps engineers use this board to evaluate the performance of their application. This board employs a two-stage, synchronous buck converter with an external voltage divider to program the output voltage.A high frequency oscillator and a PWM comparator in the pulse-width modulator (PWM) generates the signal for the two low-side (N-Channel) power switches and the synchronous high side switch. A DC voltage feedback signal for output voltage regulation is generated by the operational amplifier (op amp) and sensing resistors. The switches in the switching network are toggled on and off in sequence to convert the input voltage into the desired output voltage. The output voltage is regulated by an on-chip feedback control loop.
The PWM comparator is configured for fixed off-time operation and monitors the voltage feedback signal. If the feedback signal is lower than the reference voltage, the output of the PWM comparator is high, triggering the low-side switches and the synchronous high-side switch to turn on. This increases the output voltage. Conversely, if the feedback signal is greater than the reference voltage, the output of the PWM comparator is low and the power switches turn off, thus reducing the output voltage. This loop repeats constantly and fine-tunes the output voltage to maintain output regulation. The output filter further reduces the ripple voltage on the output.
