TPS65251EVM is an evaluation module (EVM) that helps design engineers to evaluate, simulate or demonstrate the performance and features of TI’s TPS65251 Synchronous Buck Synchronous Boost step down regulator. It is a unique power solution for applications such as optical drives, memory card readers, point of load converters, and industrial designs. The module integrates two buck regulators and one synchronous boost regulator into a single device. The TPS65251EVM is part of TI’s Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits (EDK).
The EVM provides a complete development platform in which all the features and capabilities of the device can be evaluated, demonstrated or simulated. It is designed to operate as a standalone unit or can be connected to a PC to display regulator settings, device features and performance data. The EVM also includes an integrated current sense amplifier and voltage monitoring circuit to measure the output currents and voltages of the regulator. The device can be programmed via a USB or I2C connection.
The TPS65251EVM integrates two high-efficiency synchronous buck converters and one synchronous boost converter into a single integrated circuit. The output voltages of the converters are adjustable using a simple voltage divider network. An on-board voltage reference is used to adjust the operating parameters of the regulators and the linear regulator can be programmed to different operating frequencies. A dedicated power-on reset circuit, which is connected to the power input, is also provided on the EVM to reset the converters during power loss.
The second buck converter of the TPS65251EVM is optimized for ultra-wide input voltage range and is capable of delivering up to 1.8A of output current. The built-in smart-shutdown feature ensures safe operation and soft-start circuitry helps reduce inrush current by slowly ramping up the output voltage. In addition, a dedicated cycle-by-cycle current limit is integrated into the buck converters to protect them against overcurrent events.
The synchronous boost converter is optimized for the highest possible efficiency and is capable of delivering up to 500mA of output current. A high-performance current-mode control architecture is used to deliver dynamic response and excellent line/load regulation. The output voltage is adjustable over a wide range, from 0.9V to 5.5V, and can be programmed using a voltage divider network.
The TPS65251EVM also provides an on-board temperature/over-voltage protection circuit that monitors the output voltages and shuts down the regulator in case of an over-voltage/temperature event. A functional pad protection circuit is also provided to protect the sensitive pins of the device from short circuits and ESD (electrostatic discharge) events.
In addition to the EVM, TI also offers a suite of software tools to supplement the evaluation process. Design engineers can use TI’s online design tool (WEBENCH®) to optimize and customize their designs based on their requirements. The WEBENCH tool also provides device simulations to give designers a better understanding of the performance of the device.
The TPS65251EVM is an ideal evaluation platform for design engineers who are looking for a power solution for their applications.
