TPS72501DR Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS72501DR is a linear step down voltage regulator from Texas Instrument. It is an adjustable 1A low-dropout (LDO) regulator with extended input voltage range. The TPS72501DR is designed specifically to allow power architectures with many power domains and hot-swap requirements. This regulator provides 1A continuous output current over a wide input voltage range of 1.5V to 16V. Load and line regulation typically are better than 1.5%.

Functional Block and Working Principle

The TPS72501DR consists of an adjustable LDO regulator core with integrated control, logic, and power device in a small SOP-8L package. The regulator can be enabled with an active low EN pin to reduce the supply current when it is not in use. The voltage divider connected to the ADJ pin selects the output voltage and the voltage at the FB pin maintains the VOUT stability. The internal PNP pass element is responsible for the output voltage regulation.When the device is disabled, the internal logic circuit and power element are in standby mode, the output voltage is held at 0V, and the supply current is approximately 10μA. When the regulator is enabled, the internal pull-up transistor forces the output voltage up to the output voltage selected by the voltage divider. The error amplifier then amplifies the difference of the output voltage and the feedback voltage, producing an error signal applied to the base of PNP pass element. The magnitude of the error signal determines the pass element drive current and the output voltage is maintained at a stable value.

Protection Features

The TPS72501DR includes various protections to ensure the regulator works correctly and avoid various heat sink devices any damages. First of all, the voltage regulator includes an over current limit that prevents an excessive load current to flow through the pass element. When the load current is over the current limit, the error amplifier lowers its output voltage, resulting in a larger difference between the output voltage and the feedback voltage, turning off the PNP pass element.The TPS72501DR also includes thermal protection. As the junction temperature of the PNP pass element increases, the error amplifier drives the base of the pass element with a lower drive current, reducing the output current. When the junction temperature reaches the thermal protection threshold, the gate drive current will be lowered by internal current limiting, resulting in the output voltage drops to prevent the junction temperature from further increasing.Overall, the TPS72501DR is great product for a wide range of uses including power architectures with many power domains and hot-swap requirements to low voltage industrial designs and medical systems.
