TPS73230DBVT is a low-dropout linear regulator that provides a stable output voltage covering from 2.1 V to 5.5 V with a low dropout voltage of 185 mV. Qualified for Automotive applications, the device combines a-cellby-cell protection features and an additional reverse pin protection with an external resistor. The working principle of this device is that it regulates the output voltage of the power supply by a combination of two techniques which include series pass control and voltage feedback techniques. In the series pass control technique, a resistor based network is used to convert the varying input voltage into an amount of current. The voltage feedback technique provides additional regulation by using the output of the series pass control circuit as the reference voltage to compare against the programmed voltage. The voltage difference between the two voltages is then used to control the power switch. The device also features an automatic self-protection feature which shuts down the output of the power supply if the output current is exceeded.
