Working Principle
The TPS73601DRBT is a low-dropout linear regulator. Its typical dropout voltage is just 100 mV at 100 mA. This enables it to regulate a voltage at the load lower than the input voltage, without the need for a Schottky diode that can offer more loss in the circuit. It also features a low quiescent current, monitored output current and fast, short-circuit current-limit protection.
To make sure the load is supplied with a regulated voltage, the TPS73601DRBT compares the output voltage (VOUT) with the reference voltage (VREF). If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the voltage at the non-inverting input (pin 2) of the internal error amplifier is pulled high by an internal pull-up resistor. This signal is then amplified and applied to the gate of the internal N-channel MOSFET which is used to control the output voltage. When the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the voltage at the non-inverting input is pulled low. This signal is then applied to the gate of the MOSFET and the MOSFET is turned off. This causes the output voltage to drop until the load current is low enough to balance the load and the reference voltage.
To ensure excellent output voltage accuracy, the TPS73601DRBT has an internal voltage reference. This reference voltage is factory trimmed to ensure that it can provide a low voltage and a high current accuracy. This level of accuracy is further improved by an error amplifier and a low-dropout regulator (LDO) for controlling the reference voltage.
The TPS73601DRBT also has an overvoltage protection feature. This feature prevents the output voltage from exceeding 3.3 V, even if the input voltage is higher than 4.5 V. If the output voltage exceeds 3.3 V, the overvoltage protection feature will shut off the output.
