As the output voltage of the regulator is constantly adjusted to match the reference voltage, AVP achieves a state of cycle-by-cycle voltage adjustment or “regulation”.The second block is the pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control loop. This loop is used to reduce power consumption in light load conditions. In the PFM mode, the voltage regulation loop is turned off, and the output voltage is maintained by the frequency at which PMOS switch is turned on and off. As the load current of the system decreases, the PFM controller gradually reduces the frequency at which the PMOS switch is turned on and off. The result is that the PFM controller reduces the power dissipation on the output voltage regulator, and thus the system power consumption. This is especially useful in applications where the load current continuously varies, such as USB charging.The third block is the error amplifier. This amplifier is used to compare the output voltage of the regulator to a reference voltage. Any difference between the two voltages is amplified and used to adjust the PFM control loop or the AVP control loop.The fourth block is the current limit control. This control is used to protect the regulator from exceeding its current limit, thus preventing the supply voltage from collapsing in the event of an overload. The fifth block is the output voltage level-shift circuit. This circuit is used to shift the output voltage level to match the expected level of the load device.
