TPS76618D application field and working principle

The TPS76618 is a low-noise, low-dropout linear regulator that is capable of providing up to 1.5A of output current with very low dropout voltage. It is ideal for applications that require a low noise, high input voltage power source. The device is designed to support a wide range of input voltage ranging from 4.75V to 18V. The TPS76618 is also capable of withstand very high operating temperature up to 125°C with guaranteed thermal shutdown. With its low quiescent current of 6.5µA, it provides excellent power efficiency and helps to extend the battery life.

The TPS76618 is a monolithic integrated circuit that is fabricated on a standard CMOS process. It consists of a comparator, an error amplifier, a P-channel MOSFET pass transistor, and current limit circuitry. The comparator provides a logic high output when the recorded voltage surpasses a fixed reference voltage, while a logic low output when the field voltage is below the reference voltage. The error amplifier checks and adjusts the field voltage compared with the reference voltage and provides the gate voltage to the MOSFET pass transistor to regulate the field voltage.

The P-channel pass transistor of the TPS76618 serves as the primary power switch to the DC/DC converter output. The pass transistor is operated in linear mode and is driven by the error amplifier. The purpose of the linear mode operation is to precisely control the voltage drop across the pass transistor, reducing the output voltage ripple and noise. Once the TPS76618 is activated and the output voltage reaches its regulated value, the MOSFET pass transistor passes the regulated output voltage.
