Working Principle

The TPS76718QPWPREP is a linear voltage regulator which regulates an input DC voltage to a precise lower output voltage. The device has a very low-current ground-referenced input, and regulates the input voltage to the desired output voltage. The output voltage is adjustable by changing the resistance of an external resistor divider between the reference input and the output line. The output current is limited by the device’s current-sense resistor.

The internal comparator monitors the output voltage relative to the internal reference voltage. When the voltage drops too low, the internal circuitry shuts down to protect against an overload. The TPS76718QPWPREP uses a P-channel MOSFET as the pass transistor to regulate the output voltage. As the load current changes, an intermediate current mirror senses the drain current and provides a signal to it’s driver stage.

The TPS76718QPWPREP’s internal linear regulator is designed to provide accurate, low-noise output voltage and low quiescent current (under 1 μA in shutdown mode) with very small capacitive loading. The IC is also designed to withstand transient output over-voltages and reverse-battery conditions.
