Working principle

At the heart of the TPS76918DBVT is a precision voltage reference and an error amplifier, as well as a small N-Channel MOSFET for load current. The output voltage is established by the voltage reference and error amplifier. The voltage reference is established by an on-chip bandgap of 1.ÌV, which is highly stable over a wide temperature and process range. The signal from the error amplifier is fed to the gate of the MOSFET, compared to the reference, and the gap is used to control the gate current and thus the drain current. Because the drain current is low, and the voltage drop across the MOSFET is also low, the voltage drop across the device can be minimized.

The quiescent current of the device remains low while powered on. The device comes with internal current limit and thermal shutdown protection, which helps monitor, protect and prolong the life of the device. Furthermore, the TPS76918DBVT’s input voltage range can be either regulated, or inversely temperature-compensated, with a differential range of up to 40°C. The device also features external shutdown control for system power management.
