Working Principle
The TPS77012DBVT is a low-power and low-noise linear voltage regulator which can maintain a high degree of regulation in voltage output while dissipating very little power. It is designed to operate with a wide input voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V, which enables the regulator to be used in battery powered applications. The power consumption of the regulator is minimized in both normal and dropout modes due to the low dropout voltage of 190mV. The device contains many safety features such as over-current protection, short circuit protection and thermal protection, which make it suitable to be used in automotive and industrial applications as well.
The device consists of a voltage reference, an N-type MOSFET, an error amplifier and a current source. The voltage reference provides a stable reference for the error amplifier which compares an adjustable regulated voltage set by an external resistor to the input voltage. When the input voltage is greater than the regulated voltage, the difference is amplified by the error amplifier and is connected to the gate of the N-type MOSFET, which acts like a switch. The N-type MOSFET is operated in linear mode and its gate voltage determines the output current flow and hence regulating the output voltage. The current source keeps the gate voltage of the N-type MOSFET constant, thus maintains the regulated output voltage even when the output load is varied.
The TPS77012DBVT is equipped with an under voltage lockout feature to ensure the device remains in a disabled state if the input voltage drops below 1.8V. The device also has a thermal protection feature which shuts off the regulator when the internal die temperature goes above the specified temperature and turns it back on when the temperature cools down. This feature provides protection against thermal runaway.
