Tantalum Capacitors A tantalum capacitor, also known as a tantalum electrolytic capacitor, is an electronic component widely used in electronic circuits. It is composed of two electrodes separated by a dielectric layer of tantalum oxide. It has a high capacitance to volume ratio thanks to the atomically thin dielectric layer, a much higher one than regular electrolytic capacitors. It also has a comparatively low equivalent series resistance (ESR), lower than that of many other types of capacitors. The TPSE107M016R0100 is a type of tantalum capacitor with a particularly wide range of applications and a unique working principle.The TPSE107M016R0100 hasn\'t just one, but two applications in the market. It is a large, case-sized capacitor with a rated voltage of 16 VDC and capacitance of 10μF. It is an excellent choice for high-frequency applications or circuits which require a large capacitance in a limited space. It is also used for bulk storage in switch-mode power supplies, for decoupling power and ground planes, and various other types of circuits.The TPSE107M016R0100\'s working principle is based on the electrolytic variation of the conventional dielectric. Unlike electrolytic capacitors, which consist of an electrolyte along with two foil electrodes separated by a paper dielectric, the TPSE107M016R0100 has, instead of a paper dielectric, a tantalum oxide film grown by an anodization process. This unique construction allows it to withstand high voltage and current, making it an excellent choice for high-power applications. The innermost part of the capacitor is a metal cylinder, made of alloyed niobium-tantalum. The positive electrode is then built inside it, and the negative one is formed outside by the anodization of the tantalum oxide film. The oxide film, along with the anode, also forms a dielectric layer. The oxide film is virtually atomically thin, and together with the metal cylinder and electrodes, it forms an electrolytic-type capacitor. The metal cylinder also acts as a guard in the capacitor, allowing it to have a longer life and withstanding higher voltages than regular capacitors. It also shields the metal electrode and dielectric from external environmental hazards, such as temperature changes and moisture. The addition of the guard also enables the capacitor to operate at low temperature, making it an excellent choice for low-temperature and low-power applications.The capacitance of the TPSE107M016R0100 is determined mainly by the size of the innermost cylinder and the thickness of the oxide film. Just like any electrolytic type capacitor, its capacitance will increase with the voltage applied, up until it reaches its rated value. Additionally, the ESR and leakage current of the capacitor are also measured and can be found in its datasheet. The TPSE107M016R0100 tantalum capacitor has many advantages when compared to regular electrolytic capacitors.
