The TPSM846C23EVM-806 is an evaluation board featuring a DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, which is engineered to be used for low power applications. The board is designed to implement a self-powered single phase, quasi-resonant (QR) flyback converter with integrated driver. This board is equipped with an MCP1641 Switched Mode regulator.
The MCP1641 is a peak current mode regulator with a built-in “self-timed” control loop concept to sense the peak current followed by a subsequent switch on time instead of an entire fixed period current control loop. The control loop features current-mode control with either loop compensation by a single RC circuit or the use of several external components. The inner loop maintains a fixed ton/toff ratio while the outer loop regulates the output voltage.
The TPSM846C23EVM-806 has been developed to perform in a wide input voltage range from 85 to 265VAC. Its rated power is up to 14W for output voltages of 12V, while maximum power is 18W. This board also features many safety and protection features such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-voltage protection (OVP). It is very suitable for low-power applications running from an AC line.
The operating principle of the TPSM846C23EVM-806 is simple. When a voltage is applied across the primary side of the transformer, it induces a voltage in the secondary winding. This voltage is rectified by the bridge rectifier, which produces DC voltage at the output. This voltage is further regulated by the MCP1641 SMPS IC.
