TPSMB160CA TVS - Diodes Application Field and Working Principle

TPSMB160CA is a type of unidirectional transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode known as a surface mount bidirectional (SMDB) diode. It is a very common type of diode used in many applications as it provides effective protection against transient voltage, allowing it to absorb and dissipate the harmonics and over-voltage signals resulting from the power supply or other devices connected to it. The device is capable of handling a maximum voltage of 160 volts and a peak current of 350mA.

Working Principle

The TPSMB160CA diode works by clamping the voltage at the rated peak current value and then dissipating the high energy voltage spike as heat. The device has two distinct stages of operation: the clamping voltage stage and the dissipation stage. In the clamping voltage stage, when the voltage spike reaches the peak current level, the diode starts to conduct and the current passes through the joule heating element. This joule heating element then increases the temperature of the device, generating heat and ultimately limiting the voltage to the clamping voltage value.

In the second stage, the dissipating stage, the diode absorbs the energy created by the joule heating element and dissipates it as heat. The diode is very efficient in dissipating the energy as it is capable of safely dissipating up to 1kW of energy. The dissipated energy is then converted into thermal energy, resulting in the temperature of the device increasing. If the energy exceeds the specified thermal limits, the fuse of the device trips, preventing it from further damage.
