It is also RoHS compliant for applications requiring lead-free constructions. The TPSMF4L30A is characterized by its low leakage current and minimal capacitance.

Working Principle

The TPSMF4L30A is a Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode which works by clamping the voltage across its terminals to a safe level. TVS diodes are highly sensitive to transient surge events, and will switch on and begin conducting shortly after the voltage level across its terminals exceeds the diode’s breakdown voltage.
Once the diode is activated, it will begin conducting the high peak current and dissipate the transient surge. The diode’s capacitance will increase with increased voltage, and will reduce the high peak current to a safe level by providing additional protection and clamping of the surge. Once the voltage level drops below the diode’s breakdown voltage, the diode will return to its non-conducting state.
The components that make up the TPSMF4L30A diode are a highly ionized gas chamber, a zener diode, and a resistive element. The gas chamber will provide insulation between the zener diode and the resistive element. When the voltage across the diode exceeds it’s breakdown voltage, the gas chamber will conduct electricity to the zener diode. The zener diode will then supply the current to the resistive element, which will limit the surge current, providing the necessary voltage protection and clamping.
