The Texas Instruments TUSB542EVM is an evaluation module (EVM) for the USB Type-C and Power Deliver (PD) Front End Controller TUSB542 which is designed to control and manage the power delivery to devices over a USB Type-C cable.

It forms the physical layer (PHY) layer for USB Type-C PD communication and supports USB 3.1 Type-C Auxiliary Channel (AUX) signaling, USB 2.0, and USB BC 1.2 Charging Downstream Port (CDP) or Charging Upstream Port (CUP) roles. The TUSB542EVM EVM board and software have been designed to test both source and sink device applications. The EVM consists of a 4-lane USB Type-C PHY controller and multiple discrete components on a PCB to implement the current and voltage selection logic, as well as the other features of the TUSB542.

Application Field

Working Principle

The TUSB542EVM board has a USB Type-C receptacle and two USB Type-C plugs to enable the detection and control of the USB Type-C and PD protocol. The main features of the TUSB542EVM EVM are:

• A 4-lane USB Type-C PHY controller
• Current and voltage selection logic, implemented by discrete components on the EVM board
• Connection to the USB Type-C and PD-enabled sink and source devices
• Version 2.0 of the DPD program, which allows the user to configure and modify the TUSB542 parameters and the Type-C and PD transaction objects

The current selection logic of the TUSB542EVM enables the user to select different current and voltage values for the power supply to the sink and source devices. It also provides an Rp resistor which can be used to adjust the USB Type-C port attached device in the operation of desired current and voltage setting.

Using the DPD program, the user can monitor the current values, voltage values, and voltages in voltage rails of the EVM. This allows them to characterize the voltage supply response of the connected sink and source devices.

The USB 3.1 Type-C and AUX channels can also be monitored using the auxiliary extender and the DPD program. This allows the user to analyze the performance of the USB Type-C and AUX channels, and to adjust the AUX channel output level. The CDP/CUP mode control signal is used to switch the EVM between the source and sink modes.
