TVS - Thyristors

Thyristors (also known as SCRs or silicon control rectifiers) are a type of semiconductor switch used commonly in power electronics. Based on their semiconductor or diode-like properties, thyristors are used to control electric power. Thyristors are capable of turning power on and off in response to a small signal amount change in the trigger current or voltage. Due to their low cost and relatively simple design, thyristors are commonly used in many devices, from power supplies to protective devices.

TVB075NSA-L Application Field and Working Principle

TVB075NSA-L is a thyristor-based semiconductor device from Vishay Semiconductor. This device is suitable for automotive applications, such as in electronic control units (ECU) and ignition systems. It can also be used in general industrial electronic systems.

The TVB075NSA-L is based on a thyristor structure. Additionally, this thyristor employs both different types of protection. Firstly, it is protected from overvoltages by the use of an external voltage-dependent resistor (VDR). This VDR limits the peak current and voltage on the main control terminal when a surge or high voltage is applied on the anode terminal. Secondly, it is protected from overtemperature using the Temperature Terminal Voltage Limiting (TTVL) function. This function limits the anode-cathode voltage when the thermal load exceeds surface temperature (Tjmax). This prevents device destruction while allowing some acceptance of over-transient voltages.
