TVN 3-1222

DC–DC converters are used to transfer electrical energy from one source to another, usually from one DC power source to another. In many applications, it is beneficial to convert a DC voltage into a different DC voltage in order to properly transfer energy from one device to another. The most common use of DC–DC converters is in battery life extenders. They are used to reduce the voltage on a battery to extend its life. 

The TVN 3-1222 is a high-efficiency, wide input voltage range DC–DC converter specifically designed for applications requiring 3V to 12V outputs, including automotive systems, industrial systems and consumer applications. The device is a synchronous buck regulator with a primary side N-MOSFET controller and a secondary-side synchronous rectifier. This design allows for a wide input voltage range of 4 V to 40 V, and enables very high efficiency and low ripple at both very low and high loads. The integrated high-side control MOSFET on the primary side allows for a simple solution without need for an additional active pull-up or an opto-coupler. The TVN 3-1222 DC–DC converter has a maximum output current of 8A, allowing it to be used in applications where high power is required, while still maintaining a high level of efficiency. The device is designed to handle up to a 70% duty cycle, allowing for an output voltage range of 3V to 12V. The output voltage is regulated by the integrated error amplifier, which is connected to the onboard voltage divider enabling remote sense of the output voltage.

The output voltage is also protected from excessive voltage build-up, which can occur in applications with high inrush currents. This is achieved by individually limiting the peak current on the output. This results in a cooler running converter, which is critical in many industrial and consumer applications where the device needs to be strictly regulated and dissipate as little heat as possible.
