Working Principle
The UCC2580N-2 PWM control IC is an integrated device that combines both primary and secondary feedback controls as well as integrated line and load protection. The Universal Offline Flyback converter works in duty mode control and uses the switching duty cycle as the control parameter. The duty cycle is determined by the voltage feedback comparison between a reference voltage, Vref, and the p-side current transient detection. In auto-restart mode, the PWM is active when the line sense voltage exceeds the under-voltage lockout threshold, while in the active burst mode, the PWM is active only when the drain-source voltage of the MOSFET exceeds a fixed hysteresis voltage level. The built-in overvoltage protection circuit monitors the output voltage during high load transients preventing the output voltage exceeding limits and potentially damaging the power supply.
The UCC2580N-2 PWM controller features a VCC-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a maximum frequency of 400 kHz. The output of the VCO is used to drive the synchronous rectifier MOSFET and the input of the SR MOSFET is the VCC-controlled oscillator’s inverted output. The PWM control IC also has a 300V Begins-of-Cycle switch which enables higher power efficiency and lower standby power. The built-in line detection circuit eliminates the need for an external resistor as well as a high voltage start-up circuit that includes two different start-up current options for different load application. The combination of these features makes the UCC2580N-2 PWM control IC an ideal choice for designing low power offline switchers.
