The UCC28089D is a synchronous buck pulse width modulated (PWM) controller designed for a wide range of dc-to-dc applications. It is a member of the Ultra Low-noise Class in the UCC280xx family of devices, which offers excellent low-noise performance and power efficiency. This device is designed to provide optimum, fully adjustable, bandwidth, output voltage, and start-up conditions.
The UCC28089D is optimized for use in any board-mounted dc-to-dc application requiring a low output voltage (VOUT) with high current output capability from a wide input voltage (VIN) range. The device is also suitable for moderate voltage step-down applications in which the device’s output current and switching frequency can be adjusted by user-defined resistor ratios.
The UCC28089D consumes very low quiescent current when in power saving mode. In addition, the device has a low off-mode current and includes a power-up delay feature.
The UCC28089D has two Configurable Inputs which allow selecting the pulse width modulation (PWM) control mode, setting the mode pin low (active high operation) or high (active low operation). Additionally, the UCC28089D also provides integrated Shoot-Through/FET Protection and Internal Soft Start as well as undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and overcurrent protection (OCP).
The UCC28089D is designed to operate at switching frequencies up to 1MHz and is capable of providing a wide range of output currents with enhanced light-load efficiency. It operates effectively with a wide variety of external power MOSFETs, with both fast and slow body diode characteristics.
The UCC28089D supports an operating temperature range from −40° to +125° Celsius and is available in a 16-pin SOIC package, making it a great choice for applications requiring a compact, reliable, cost-effective, and efficient controller solution.
In addition to the voltage regulator, the UCC28089D also includes several other features such as: Fault Masking, Interleaving, Phase-Shifting, Shutdown, Frequency Reduction, Positive Voltage Positioning, and Frequency/Duty Cycle Programming. The Fault Masking feature provides a means to mask over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-current events and allows the system to continue operating while the event is monitored.
The Interleaving feature allows two phase outputs to be combined, resulting in higher resolution and improved output voltage accuracy. The Phase-Shifting feature helps reduce noise and improves ac performance by allowing two phase outputs to be shifted in phase with one another.
The Shutdown feature allows the UCC28089D to enter low power state at a user-defined input voltage and current. The Frequency Reduction feature allows the device to reduce the switching frequency when operating under light load conditions and reduces output voltage ripple.
The Positive Voltage Positioning feature adjusts the output voltage by reducing the switching duty cycle and the Frequency/Duty Cycle Programming feature allows the user to program the switching frequency and duty cycle and optimize it for a particular application.
