UCC2889N Application Field and Working Principle
The UCC2889N from Texas Instruments is a CMOS integrated circuit designed for isolated offline switchers & AC-DC converters. It is a low cost, high performance, and low power input current-mode PWM controller with high frequency operation and under voltage lock out. It also features integrated synchronous rectifier (SR) functions, on-off control with external PWM input, and an internal oscillator that can be programmed to produce switching frequencies up to 500kHz.
The UCC2889N is an ideal solution for a variety of power conversion applications such as offline switching supplies, AC-DC converters, and more. UCC2889N Working Principle
The UCC2889N utilizes a current-mode PWM control to achieve its high efficiency operation. This type of control was developed to improve switching circuit efficiency and performance. In this type of control, the control circuit operates in the constant frequency, but the pulse width is constantly being adjusted according to the load current in order to maintain the same output voltage. This allows the power supply to maintain the same output voltage regardless of load current changes, which increases efficiency and maintains regulation.
The UCC2889N operates using an internal Hysteretic Structure Adaptive On-Time/Off-Time control loop. An internal Hysteretic Structure Adaptive On-Time/Off-Time control loop allows the switching frequency to change depending on the load. This provides excellent load regulation and improved dynamic response to changes in line, load, and temperature. It also allows the UCC2889N to compile with strict current limit accuracy requirements and improved line voltage regulation while offering high efficiency operations.
The UCC2889N also features an External On/Off Control input, allowing it to be used in applications such as off-line switchers where an external control pin is needed. The Internal Synchronous Rectifier (SR) function integrated within the UCC2889N delivers lower power dissipation on the primary side. The switching losses in the SR are low and allow greater efficiency and lowered cost by eliminating the need for an external SR.
By utilizing the UCC2889N, designers are able to take advantage of great features to implement robust and high-efficiency designs. With its low cost, high performance, and low power input current-mode PWM control, the UCC2889N meets the most stringent design requirements.
