USB-to-RS232 adapter boards are becoming increasingly popular due to their flexibility, affordability and ease of use. The UM232H application field and working principle are representative of the latest such boards which provide an easy-to-use solution to allow a host computer to communicate with legacy RS232 peripherals.The UM232H board is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit, manufactured by FTDI Chip, which bridges a Universal Serial Bus connection to a classic Serial Port. This board stands out amongst its contemporaries in its variety of important features. The UM232H board includes a USB-A connection, a 4-pin screw terminal and male header connection for RS232 signals, circuit protection for ESD, logging of vital status information, optional power output mode, optional de-bounced reset control and device configuration capability. In addition, the FTDI Virtual COM Port drivers for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux allow the user to set up a virtual serial port to allow connectivity with classic serial application software without writing any code or extra driver software.On a functional level, the UM232H contains a USB-UART converter chip and an on-board UART converter. The USB-UART converter chip, or \'USB-Side\' of the UM232H is used for connecting to the host USB port and supports 12Mb/s speeds. This is connected to an on-board UART converter chip, or \'UART-Side\' that supports the RS232 signal interface.As with other application board/kits such as the FT2232H and FT4232H, the device may be configured to operate in USB/UART FIFO mode or in USB/UART bridge mode. In FIFO mode, both the UART and USB sides are open for data transfer and during USB/UART bridge mode, the data is passed through from the USB side to the UART side and vice-versa.The circuit protection provided is critical for ensuring that the board is not damaged due to ESD or other potential transients. The board includes a 2KV ESD protection device which helps to protect against destructive electrostatic discharge as well as circuit-level protection devices. The 2KV ESD protection device is connected at each of the board\'s USB and UART terminals to prevent discharge.The logging of vital status information is a point of difference that sets the UM232H board apart from others in its class. The board includes a dedicated real-time clock for tracking device data and a unique serial number burned into the ROM of the board\'s chip which allows it to be identified for logging and tracing purposes.An optional power output mode allows for connection to any type of power source, such as batteries, without the need for an external power adapter. This is especially useful when working with mobile and portable equipment. In addition, the board also includes an optional de-bounce reset control start-up signal which can be used to configure the UART chip to a standard setting for reliable operation.The FTDI Virtual COM Port drivers for Windows, OSX, and Linux allow for easy configuration and setup of the device, allowing it to function as a virtual serial port and allowing legacy serial application software to communicate with the board.The overall suite of features of the UM232H board makes it a flexible and reliable board which can accommodate a variety of applications and purposes. The board is easy to use, affordable and offers reliable communication, circuit protection, logging capabilities and device configuration options. The FTDI chip range of USB-to-RS232 adapter boards, including the UM232H ensure that legacy serial peripherals have an easy route to integrating with USB-enabled hosts.
