Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) are an important class of oscillator basically used as signal generators of a given frequency with respect to an applied voltage. VCOs exist in the form of monolithic integrated circuit (ICs) or free-standing components. One major example of VCOs is the UMX-269-D16-G. This VCO is capable of generating frequencies from 923.5 to 960 MHz and provides a low phase noise performance. It has a supply voltage range of 5 V.

This VCO\'s primary application field is in the radio frequency (RF) and microwave telecommunications industry. Specifically, it can be used as an oscillator in mobile communications systems as a local oscillator in frequency upconversion modules. It is also suitable for use as a clock oscillator at various intermediate frequency (IF) ranges in transceivers, filters or dividers.

The working principle of the UMX-269-D16-G revolves around a resonator, the principle active device. This resonator can be in the form of a quartz crystal, LC tank or SAW resonator. The resonator forms an oscillating electrical circuit tuned to a particular frequency and is excited via an excitation energy source.

The resonator design is then tailored to the particular oscillation frequency desired by the VCO. The resonator is then connected to an electronic circuit to create the particular oscillation frequency of the VCO. This is done by varying the frequency of the oscillation based on the voltage applied to the circuit.

In operation, the UMX-269-D16-G uses a negative resistance in series with a parallel resonator. The voltage applied to these components causes the resonator frequency to vary depending on the voltage. The output of the VCO is then taken from a buffer amplifier.

The UMX-269-D16-G is a highly reliable and good quality VCO, suitable for use in modern mobile communication system transceivers. It offers excellent phase noise performance with very low current consumption and maximum output power of up to 2.2 dBm. It has a low supply voltage range of 5 V and is available in a tiny surface-mounted package.
