Voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) are electronic oscillators whose oscillation frequency can be precisely controlled by a voltage input. They are widely used in radio transmission and telecommunication equipment, test instrumentation and microwave applications. The UMZ-117-A16-G VCO is a high-performance, temperature-compensated oscillator operating in the C-band frequency range.

The UMZ-117-A16-G utilizes an advanced design that provides superior linearity performance and improved phase noise performance across a wide frequency range. It features an on-chip phase-locked loop (PLL) with a smooth transition range that allows it to transition from the L-band to the C-band without any additional hardware. The Phase Detector gain is adjustable, allowing for finer control of the VCO\'s operating frequency. This feature also allows for temperature compensation, ensuring that the VCO retains its accuracy and stability even when operating in extreme temperatures.

The UMZ-117-A16-G also features a wide variety of output formats, including frequency synthesized (FS) sinusoidal outputs, rectangular wave and single-ended sinusoidal outputs. With the FS output mode, the VCO can be programmed from 0.0625 to 32 MHz. This makes the UMZ-117-A16-G very useful in applications such as radio transmitters, radio receivers, televisions and communications equipment.

The UMZ-117-A16-G operates off an externally supplied power supply. The operating range is from +8.0 V up to +11.0 V. The VCO consumes less than 3.2 mA of current at this operating voltage. The VCO\'s output noise floor is less than -150 dBc/Hz, ensuring superior performance in high-frequency applications. It also features an integrated shielding to minimize EMI/RFI emission.

The UMZ-117-A16-G functions by using an external voltage input to control a frequency divider in the PLL. The voltage level sets a corresponding division ratio in the divider which determines the output frequency. The VCO output is then compared to an internal reference, and the PLL locks onto the frequency that corresponds to the division ratio. The VCO will then oscillate at a frequency determined by the voltage level applied at the input.
