Film capacitors (also known as plastic film capacitors) are capacitors that, unlike ceramic capacitors, use a thin plastic film as the dielectric medium. A variety of differing dielectric films such as polystyrene, polyester, polypropylene, and teflon can be used. These types of capacitors are often used in voltage control, power conditioning, and signal filtering applications, as well as in consumer electronics.
The UNL8W40K-F film capacitor is designed to provide excellent performance in high-density electronic applications or anywhere a low profile is desired. It is a non-polarized, three Termination Short Form Capacitor with three terminal base pins. It has a heat-dissipating, electroplated, gold-plated bottom, with a silver epoxy coating over the base pin terminal.
Working Principle: A film capacitor is a passive electrical component that consists of two or more conductive surfaces separated by a dielectric (insulating) material. This layer of insulating material can be a thin film made of polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, or even ceramic. When a voltage is applied to a film capacitor, the dielectric material between the two conductive surfaces is compressed. This compression of the dielectric material creates an electric field. When the voltage is removed from the capacitor, the electric field is released, and the stored energy is released in the form of a current.
