TVS Diode (Transient Voltage Suppressor), also known as spike suppressors or surge suppressors, are semiconductor devices used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from sudden and temporary voltage spikes that can occur on a power line, data line or signal line. The USB50815C/TR13 is one such model from the USB series of general purpose TVS devices from UnitedSi. The device is designed to protect against ESD (electrostatic discharge), EFT (electrical fast transient), surges, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) on signal, data, and power lines, making it a commonly used TVS device for a variety of audio, video, communications, and equipment applications.
The USB50815C/TR13 is a unidirectional device, which means current only flows one way. The device has two pins that link into the circuit – an input and an output. The input is the side of the device connected to the power or signal line, and the output is the side connected to the sensitive electronics or other components being protected. When there is a surge exceeding the maximum peak pulse power of 8A, the voltage will rise on the input side of the device. In such an event, the device triggers and provides a low impedance path for the current to pass onto the output side of the device, thus preventing any damage to the connected components. Once the surge or interference has passed, the low impedance quickly decreases, and the device is then back in a quiescent state, ready for the next surge or interference.
The USB50815C/TR13 is a small surface-mount device, measuring only 1mm x 0.5mm, making it particularly useful for applications where size matters. It’s available with three options for rating – either a 5V, 6V or 12V rating. The device also has a low clamping voltage when activated, typically at 2.7V on the 5V version, 4.3V on the 6V version and 7.1V on the 12V version. The USB50815C/TR13 is built using the company’s proprietary planar multilayer process for extremely low leakage, low capacitance and superior surge protection.
Due to its small size, low clamping voltage and excellent surge protection characteristics, the USB50815C/TR13 has a wide range of applications. It can be used in a range of equipment that requires ESD and EFT protection including handheld consumer electronics such as smartphones and tablets, communications equipment including landline phones and radios, and television receiver equipment. The USB50815C/TR13 is also suitable for automotive electronics such as airbags and infotainment systems, as well as general electronics such as PCs and servers.
In addition to providing excellent surge and ESD protection capabilities, the USB50815C/TR13 is also well-suited for applications that require low capacitance, low leakage and good temperature stability. The device has a maximum capacitance of 0.1pF between its two terminals, a maximum leakage of 10nA at 18V, and can operate within a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. With its combination of qualities, the USB50815C/TR13 is an attractive choice for a wide range of applications that require ESD, EFT and surge protection.
