NTC Thermistors
NTC thermistors, or negative temperature coefficient thermistors, are temperature sensors used in many applications, one of which is the USP8798. The purpose of this article is to explain the USP8798 application field and working principle.NTC thermistors are made from semiconductors, such as organic polymers. They are made up of a material which reacts to temperature changes, known as the “sensitive layer”. This is usually an organic polymer assembled in a thin film on the surface of the thermistor. As the temperature of the environment increases, the resistance of the element increases as well. Conversely, when the temperature decreases, the resistance decreases as well. The USP8798 is a type of NTC thermistor particularly suitable for use in medical device applications, such as wireless body temperature monitoring and detection. It has a wide temperature measurement range from -40°C to 125°C and its small size (1.3mm x 0.3mm) means it is suitable for medical device design. The structure of the device also allows for easier integration, such as in wrist watch designs.The USP8798 consists of a central heater, which is surrounded by the sensitive layer. As the temperature of the environment gradually changes, the resistance of the device changes as well, resulting in an output current which depends on the resistance ratio between the hot and sensing pads. In order to control the output current and its accuracy, the USP8798 incorporates an on-chip reference resistor. This is used to measure the output current and to adjust it in order to ensure it is accurate to within a few degrees. The output current is then fed into a temperature sensing circuit, where it is used to measure and control the temperature. The USP8798 provides a distinct advantage over other types of temperature sensors such as thermocouples because it is much smaller and easier to integrate into a medical device. Furthermore, the accuracy and reliability of the device is very high, making it ideal for applications where temperature accuracy is critical.
