Universal thermocouple (UTPCH185) is a device used to measure temperature with the help of two dissimilar metals. In principle, two conductors (thermoelements) composed of dissimilar materials, when joined at one junction, are subjected to a temperature difference at another junction which induced a prospective difference across the pair of conductors. The measured prospective difference can be correlated to the temperature difference between the junctions of the two conductors. This effect states that when two metals with different thermal conductivities are joined together at the same junctions, an EMF is produced which is proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. This EMF can be measured using a voltmeter and can be correlated with the temperature. The EMF produced by the thermoelement can be up to four hundred millivolts to three volts in open circuit condition.
