The V100ZA3PX2855 varistor works on the principle of thermionic emission. A highly conductive, metal oxide layer is coated onto the metal-to-semiconductor junction of the device. This metal oxide is activated at high voltage levels and the thermionic emission of electrons causes an increase in the conductivity of the varistor, allowing surge current to pass through it. When the high energy surge is no longer present, the voltage across the varistor drops back to its normal value, causing the electrons to recombine with the metal oxide and causing the varistor to return to non-conductive state.

As a result, the total energy absorbed by the varistor is reduced to a minimal level, preserving the operation of the system. On the other hand, the varistor will protect the system from both normal overvoltages across the power system, as well as the sudden large energy spikes associated with transients.

This makes the V100ZA3PX2855 an extremely reliable way of protecting electronic circuits against overvoltage or transients, while also providing significant power savings over the lifetime of the device.
