When the voltage applied to the device increases above the rated voltage, the impedance drops and current will begin to flow through the device. This flow of current will create an opposite voltage across the device, effectively clamping the voltage down to the rated voltage.The dielectric strength of the device is also dependant on its operating temperature. At temperatures below -55C, the dielectric strength of the device remains constant.
