TVS (Transient Voltage Supressors) are components used to protect circuits from voltage spikes and overvoltage conditions. As part of the surge protection family, they are designed to safely absorb transient voltages (stored electrical energy) and divert it to ground, thus eliminating voltage spikes/lapses and protecting downstream circuits. TVS devices can take the form of Varistors, Transient Voltage Suppressors, and Metallo-Oxide Varistors (MOVs).
Among the most popular of these components is the V131HG34 MOV. It is a bidirectional voltage suppressor constructed of zinc oxide, a common material used to reduce voltage transients. This MOV designed for primary or secondary protection and it is typically found in high-end applications such as military/industrial, communications, computers, and telecommunications.
The working principle of V131HG34 MOV’s is based on what is referred to as the “avalanche breakdown” effect. This effect enables the MOV component to absorb and dissipate the voltage spike without creating excessive heat or damaging the device or other connected components.
In operation, the MOV is designed to conduct whenever it reaches its rated clamping voltage, usually in response to a voltage spike. Once its voltage rating is reached, a large current flow takes place and the voltage spike is diverted to ground, which is called “clamping”. This conducts the termal energy of the voltage spike away from the connected circuit and downstream components, thus protecting them from damage caused by overvoltage.
In addition to its primary protection function, V131HG34 MOVs also offer secondary protection in the event of a thermal overload or dismantling. When current levels exceed a pre-determined limit or the MOV is dismantled, any further voltage potential is forced into ground, where the MOV can safely absorb and dissipate the additional thermal energy. In addition, MOVs can be connected in parallel to increase their surges current capacity in order to offer enhanced protection.
The V131HG34 MOV operates at peak volatges from 19V(dc) to 370V(dc) with capacitance ratings from 7pF to 130pF. Their typical capacitance tolerance is +25/-30% per dielectric voltage and they include silver palladium plated terminals for better solderability. The dynamic surge current capability (lpeak) is usually around 7kA and the rated voltage resistance (Vr) ranges from 19V to 370V.
When properly installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions, the V131HG34 MOV should provide adequate protection in most scenarios. To ensure optimum protection from voltage spikes and overvoltage, they are commonly employed in conjunction with other components such as fuses/circuit protection relays and Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs).
In summary, the V131HG34 MOV is used in high-end applications to protect against voltage spikes/lapses, overvoltage, and thermal overloads. It is designed to absorb incoming transient energy and divert it to ground safely and efficiently. The design of the MOV includes silver palladium plated terminals and dynamic surge current capability peak ratings of 7kA. When installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, it should provide reliable and efficient protection.
