Varistors, or voltage dependent resistors (VDRs), are passive two-terminal components used in electronic circuits to protect against surges in voltage. MOVs, or metal oxide varistors, are a type of varistor with zinc oxide as the active component. MOVs are designed to protect against transient overvoltage events, such as lightning strikes, power surges, and electromagnetic interference.

The V250SM20 is a typical metal oxide varistor which can handle up to 250 volts of sustained voltage and 20 volts of transient overvoltage. It is a disc shaped component, 6mm in diameter and 2.8mm thick, with two metallic leads for wire connection.

The working principle of the V250SM20 is based on the fact that the semi-conductor material of zinc oxide has a non-linear, negative resistance characteristic. This means that its resistance changes exponentially depending on the applied voltage across it. When the voltage is close to the nominal value, the resistance is low. However, when the applied voltage exceeds the preset level (the breakdown voltage) the resistance suddenly increases drastically, limiting the current flow.

In normal operation of the V250SM20, the voltage across it is below the threshold, and the varistor has low resistance, allowing electric current to flow and providing a protective circuit against overvoltage. When an overvoltage occurs, the varistor quickly changes state, limiting the current flow and thus protecting the circuit from damage.

The V250SM20 is typically used in SMPS, computer cards and other electronic circuits where protection from overvoltage is required. It is also used in medical equipment, aerospace applications, and automotive applications, where reliable protection against voltage spikes is necessary.
