TVS – Varistors, MOVs are essential for protecting electronic equipment from surges, over-voltage, over-current and opposite polarity conditions. The V25S320P is a bipolar device suitable for alternating current (AC) applications that offers a combination of protection, reliability and high energy handling capacity. This device is often used for the protection of DC-to-DC converters, AC power sources, industrial grade equipment and other critical circuits.
The V25S320P’s working principle is based on the concept of metal-oxide varistor (MOV), which is a nonlinear, voltage-dependent resistor. MOVs are formed by combining zinc oxide and other metal oxides, along with a matrix of ceramic and other materials. When the voltage applied across the MOV is below the dielectric breakdown voltage (known as the Varistor Voltage, or V1mA), it provides a low resistance path. As the applied voltage increases, the resistance of the varistor increases exponentially and it begins to increase the current, thus limiting further increase in the voltage. The Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) used in the V25S320P can handle energy up to 320 Joules.
The high current handling capability of V25S320P, 330A (8/20 µs,) is achieved by a combination of avalanche and thermal protection properties of the MOVs. The MOVs have a ceramic matrix layer called the Electromigration Resistant Layer, which provides resistance against current surge and voltage transients. This layer also safeguards against dielectric breakdown caused by high energy discharges. The additional avalanche and thermal protection, which includes a temperature-dependent breakdown voltage (VBR), provides further protection against overvoltage and overcurrent conditions.
The V25S320P has an integrated suppressor circuit which can quickly detect over current signals and instantly reduce the current intensity by completely isolating the circuit from the source. This ensures a fast response time for the device, making it capable of protecting the circuit from an overload situation in just a few microseconds.
The enhanced protection properties of the V25S320P make it an ideal choice for applications that require absolute protection against over voltage and over current conditions. It can be used in DC-to-DC converters, AC power sources, industrial grade equipment and other critical circuits where reliable protection against power disturbances is essential. This device is also suitable for heavy duty applications, and is designed to withstand temperatures of up to 105ºC.
