TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) are electrical components which are used primarily to protect electronic circuits from damage caused by transient voltage surges. MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) and varistors are two components which belong to the TVS family. They both provide protection against high voltage transients and noise but differ considerably in terms of their characteristics and the application fields in which they are used.

The V360CH8 is a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) and is specifically designed for high surge protection applications. It has the capability to absorb high surge current levels while exhibiting low let-through values for both normal and higher running currents. It has a very wide operating voltage range of up to 15kV, and is also suited to both AC and DC power supplies. Due to its impressive high surge capability, this MOV is primarily used in applications where high peak transient voltages exist such as motor drives, UPS systems, as well as high end electronic and industrial systems.

The working principle behind the V360CH8 is that of a non-linear resistive element which limits instantaneous overvoltages or spikes by presenting a low impedance path to ground. The V360CH8 is composed of a highly compressed mixture of zinc oxide grains which act as resistors.
