The V39RA16 is an excellent voltage transient protector device that is used in a variety applications. It consists of a proprietary silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) structure that provides functionally unlimited charges and discharges to protect electrical and electronic components from voltage transients. To understand the functioning and applications of the V39RA16, it is important to understand the categories it falls into - TVS (transient voltage suppressors), Varistors, and MOVs (metal oxide varistors).TVS devices, such as the V39RA16, are designed to protect electrical components from destroyed caused by sudden voltage transient spikes. These devices can be either unidirectional or bidirectional, where the former will only protect against positive voltage transients and the latter will protect against both negative and positive transients. The V39RA16 is a unidirectional TVS device with a low capacitance of around 200pF. This provides protection for high speed data lines from overvoltage damage. The V39RA16 also has a low profile surface-mount package which enables easy integration into circuit boards.Varistors, or voltage dependent resistors, offer protection from voltage transients by diverting excess current away from sensitive components. Generally speaking, as voltage increases, the resistance of the varistor decreases. This “variable resistance” feature helps protect components from being damaged by sudden increases in voltage. The V39RA16 is a varistor and will act as a safeguard if voltage exceeding a predetermined level is applied to the circuit. It will reduce the amount of damage caused by the voltage transient by providing a low-impedance path and dissipating the transient energy.MOVs also known as metal oxide varistors, are also used for protection from transients. These devices have a unique construction that is a combination of ceramic and metal oxides. When exposed to an overvoltage, MOVs will dissipate the transient energy by providing a low-impedance path to ground. MOVs are ideally suited for circuits that require a rugged, cost effective and reliable protection system. The V39RA16 is an MOV device and is designed to provide protection from high-energy surges and transient voltages up to 1,500V.The V39RA16 is an excellent device for protecting electronics and electrical components from voltage transients. It offers protection in the form of a unidirectional TVS device, a voltage dependent resistor that diverts excess current away from sensitive components, and an MOV that dissipates transient energy by providing a low-impedance path to ground. These features make the V39RA16 an ideal choice for many different applications.
