The devices are designed to absorb a given amount of energy and then dissipate it as quickly as possible. By absorbing and dissipating excess energy, these devices prevent or reduce unwanted voltage spiking due to surges, EMI, and ESD. The V39ZC3P is a commercial grade, press-fit mounting, metal oxide varistor (MOV) from Vishay Semiconductor.The V39ZC3P is a series of low-to-medium power varistors with a peak power dissipation of 1.2 W. It is offered in a widely used and easily solderable 0.4” disc package and offers excellent surge capability with an energy rating of 10 joules. The device has a voltage clamping level of 38.5 V and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +85°C. Its form factor allows for it to be easily installed in a variety of applications and it is UL Recognized, RoHS Compliant, EX, ABS certified.The working principle of the V39ZC3P varistor is based on its metal oxide semi-conductor material. The material composition of the disc is designed to respond to an immediate, large voltage increase by becoming a low-impedance conductor. When the sudden current demand exceeds a specific level, electrons in the varistor start to move and it effectively acts as a short circuit for the energy. This limits the amount of time the voltage stays elevated and also reduces the peak voltage applied to the circuit, thereby preventing the circuit from damage due to the sudden voltage increase.The V39ZC3P is suitable for a wide variety of applications, such as for suppressing voltage transients in high-voltage power supplies, DC-DC converter circuits, and circuit protection in communications systems.
