Varistors, or voltage dependent resistors, MOVs and other surface mount components are used as transient voltage suppression (TVS) in a variety of devices ranging from telecommunication to consumer electronics. A variety of varistors, such as the V480LC80CP, offer distinct advantages in a variety of applications.

The V480LC8080CP is a surface-mount peak pulse suppression device (TVS). It utilizes advanced, patented, silicon chip technology and a chokeless highly enhanced ARC-resistant design to create an effective transient protection solution. The device is supplied in an 8-pin surface-mount package where two of the pins are loading pins.

The V480LC80CP uses a surge protection technology known as Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV). A MOVs component is a nonlinear, solid state resistor whose resistance decreases significantly with increasing voltage. This characteristic enables it to absorb or clamp electrical surges and protect the device it is connected to.

The V480LC80CP is fitted with MOVs chips that can withstand pulse power of up to 8kV and clamping voltage of up to 48V. Its high surge capability ensures that it can handle transient voltage levels when connected to 8/20 us waveforms.

When a transient voltage strikes the V480LC80CP, the voltage across its terminals increases, activating the nonlinear nature of the MOVs chips. The MOVs chips absorb the energy of the transient voltage, while limiting the resultant voltage across the terminals. This limits the amount of damage that the transient can do to the connected device.
