Varistors, also called voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), are electrical components made of a sintered mixture of metal oxide. This material has a non-linear, symmetric resistance-voltage curve, which has a much smaller resistance value at low voltages and a much higher resistance value at higher voltages.
This type of component is particularly useful for applications such as surge protection, high speed switching, and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility).Varistors are composed of two metallic electrodes, one running along the central axis of the cylindrical core, and a second one providing the surface area for the full sintering. V82MA3A is a surface-mounted metal oxide varistor (SMD MOV) designed to protect printed circuit boards (PCBs) and sensitive electronics from transient over voltage conditions.
