TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) is a family of circuit protection devices designed to protect electronics from voltage spikes caused by lightning or unintended operation of other circuit elements. Varistors, also known as Voltage Dependent Resistors (VDRs), are one type of TVS.Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are the most common form of varistors. The V82RA8 is an MOV specifically designed for industrial environments, where robust protection from voltage spikes or transient overvoltage is a requirement.

The V82RA8 has an operating voltage range of 8.2V-290V, which is considerably higher than other MOVs. It can also handle transients up to 6kV and 100A. The MOV acts like a "clamp" to limit the voltage to a safe level. Once the surge is over, the MOV will reset itself and be ready to act again if needed. The V82RA8 also has a low surge rate, which helps to protect sensitive equipment from the gradual voltage rise caused by long-term over-voltage conditions, such as thunderstorms.
