TVS diodes, or transient voltage surge suppressors, are designed to quickly react to conditions where large voltage transients occur in the electronics device they protect, while MOVs, or metal oxide varistors, are more directed toward a continual flow of current passing through them. TVS diodes have relatively low let-through voltages on the order of several hundred volts, whereas MOVs can withstand a lot higher current levels for a prolonged period of time.

V82ZU4P, also known as Repetitive Avalanche Varistor (RAV), is a product category of circuit protection technologies that feature repetitive avalanche breakdown characteristics. V82ZU4P devices offer superior surge arrest and continuous current overload or short-circuit protection while their response to repetitive surges is significantly faster than conventional MOVs. V82ZU4P devices feature unique avalanche behavior and temperature-independent breakdown characteristics.

V82ZU4P is designed for a variety of applications ranging from low-power consumer electronics to power distribution and industrial control equipment. V82ZU4P devices are mostly used in applications that require low-cost protection, fast response, and continuously protection. V82ZU4P\'s unique voltage regulation features provide high reliability in circuit protection against fast rising transient overvoltages.

V82ZU4P devices are designed on the basis of a special structure pair of PN junction diodes. The negative dynamic resistance of the internal PN junction leads to so-called “additivity” property, which makes it very effective for transient protection. When the transient overvoltage is applied to the V82ZU4P, the forward bias current rises sharply due to the avalanche breakdown of the PN junction diode. This rapidly increasing current absorbs the energy of the overvoltage and the voltage across the V82ZU4P device drops down until the current drops and stabilizes. During the transient overvoltage time, the V82ZU4P device exhibits a very low on-state voltage and this helps protect the sensitive internal components of the electronic equipment.

V82ZU4P devices are thermal cut-off devices which disconnect the protected circuit from the voltage source when the ambient temperature is too high. V82ZU4P devices have very short response time due to their double-layer structure. When subjected to an overload greater than their rated current, V82ZU4P devices enter their avalanche breakdown region and disconnect the voltage source from the protected circuit. V82ZU4P devices can switch between the on and off states within a few nanoseconds which makes them ideal for transient and surge protection applications.

V82ZU4P devices are mainly used for protection of telecommunications equipment, data processing systems, automotive electronics, and circuit breakers. V82ZU4P devices are especially suitable for medium voltage, low-power applications since their thermal cut-off feature can effectively respond to temperature increases and ensure that the equipment is properly operated at its nominal voltage. V82ZU4P devices can also be used as overvoltage protection devices in applications such as surge protectors and lightning surge protectors.

The V82ZU4P works by using its double-layer structure, which ensures fast response under transient overvoltage conditions and maintains a non-destructive on-state voltage under normal conditions. The device’s unique avalanche breakdown characteristics provide superior protection from large voltage transients.
