Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) perform the electrostatic protection of sensitive components from relatively large over-voltage transients. Varistors, also known as Voltage Dependent Resistors (VDRs), are widely used as transient voltage suppression devices. Similarly, Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are widely used for surge protection.
The VC020116T150WP is a low profile, surface-mount Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) device designed to protect sensitive electronic components from destructive ESD, combination wave, and surge events.
Application field: The VC020116T150WP is ideal for protecting sensitive circuits from overvoltage transients generated by ESD (unknown waveforms). It is often used on I/O interfaces, including RS232, USB, Ethernet, and industrial control equipment, as well as consumer electronics such as digital cameras, laptop computers, PDAs, and mobile phones. In addition, it can be used in automotive, mobile phone, personal safety, and industrial applications.
Working principle: The VC020116T150WP utilizes Zener diode technology. When the device is in normal operation, current passes through a Zener diode with a breakdown voltage value of 15V or less. When there is an overvoltage transient, this breakdown voltage is exceeded causing the Zener diode to break down and provide a shunt path for the current. Thus, it diverts the current away from the protected components and clamps the voltage until the energy dissipates.
The VC020116T150WP is constructed with a 150-ohm series ESD Center and an ultra low capacitance TVS diode array, which helps to ensure high-performance protection against ESD and all other transient voltage fluctuations. The device has an ESD protection level of 8kV (Human-Body Model). The surge immunity level is compliant to industrial level of IEC61000-4-2.
The VC020116T150WP is rated for maximum surge handling capability of 6A (8x20µs waveform). Its capacitance rating is low (16pF) making it an excellent choice for high-speed signal lines. The operating temperature range is -55°C to 150°C. It is available in a 16-pin, 150-mil wide, 0.65mm max low-profile package.
