VC1210L401R008 application field and working principle
TVS - Varistors, MOVs (Transient Voltage Suppressor) are regularly used in the product design in the field of electronics and electrical engineering in order to protect products from short spikes of overvoltage. VC1210L401R008 is one of these products, an axial leaded RF & Inrush current suppressor that is designed and certified in accordance with AEC-Q200. It is majorly used in the automotive industry for overvoltage surge protection.
The VC1210L401R008 is a radial-leaded ceramic MOV body with a single element power rating of 400W (8/20μs). It is designed for I/O port ESD protection and voltage clamping applications. It provides high surge current withstanding capability along with desired energy dissipation and low power consumption. It has an operating voltage of 14V-175V, Clamping Voltage (Vc_max@Ipp) of 338V, and a Lead length of 6.6mm (+/- 0.3) with a high surge current capability of 8000A (8/20μs).
MOVs based products work on a principle of resistance variation with varying voltage. In simple terms, they act as resistors which are varied in resistance with varying voltages. The breakdown voltage of the MOV is usually determined by the material composition and therefore remains constant. Also, the body of MOV comprises of metal oxide sandwiched between two electrodes. As the voltage across the MOV increases, the resistance decreases and eventually results in a breakdown. When the peak of the primary wave passes, the resistance again goes back to its original level.
The VC1210L401R008 MOV is typically used for applications with low power ratings below 400W, or with high noise voltages. It is ideal for automotive applications such as powering up a car amplifier or any electronic device that requires inrush or voltage surge protection. Other applications include automotive fuse protection, power supplies, and key electronics components, electric drive systems, automotive electronic control units, and relays.
MOVs are preferred over other surge protection devices like positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistors, fast acting fuses or circuit breakers because they possess the ability to reduce the energy and voltage levels during overvoltage conditions. This capability helps in protecting sensitive electronic and electrical circuits from damage caused by electrical surges and over-voltage. The reverse of this situation does not occur on drop below normal operating voltage because the metal oxide’s resistance remains high. This makes MOVs ideal for use in applications where the voltage cannot drop because it will cause a power disruption.
