The VC1812M501R006 is a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) device used for suppressing transients in circuits. It is a high-voltage, high-energy rated varistor capable of handling a maximum AC voltage of 1812V and a maximum DC voltage of 1212V. The VC1812M501R006 has a nominal MOV of 501V, a clamp voltage of 1440V at a minimum peak current of 6.0A and a correspondingly high energy absorption.The VC1812M501R006 is a voltage dependent resistor that is designed to protect circuits and components from damage caused by electrical transients. It is widely used in both AC and DC circuits. The device works by clamping the voltage at a given voltage by non-linear current limiting resistor. The MOV releases transient energy by dissipating it in the form of heat. This reduces the peak voltage and increases the peak current flow to a safe level.The VC1812M501R006 is used in a number of application fields which mainly include power supply, lighting and audio/video equipment. In power supplies, the MOV limits the in-rush current of the circuit and protects the power supply against line voltage transients. In lighting applications, the MOV protects high voltage lighting systems from line voltage transients. In audio-video equipment, the MOV blocks RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) and protects the components from damage caused by overloads.The working principle of the VC1812M501R006 is simple. When an overvoltage occurs on the MOV, the zener diode, which is connected in series with the MOV, feet a constant current into the device. Once the current has reached the maximum voltage rating of the MOV, it starts to conduct and clamp the voltage safely to a lower level. As the static current passes through the device, energy is absorbed and released in the form of heat by the dissipative element. This process prevents additional overvoltages from occurring while allowing the passage of current through the device.MOVs are reliable and cost-effective components that provide superior protection against transient voltage events.
