VC2220K501R095 is a notable thermally triggered metal-oxide varistor (MOV)-based transient voltage suppressor (TVS) series with many useful application fields. Working Principle
The VC2220K501R095 series is composed of a zinc oxide varistor which is bonded to two aluminum oxide blocks. This varistor operates under a junction-gate control principle, and consists of a metal oxide layer which has a number of patches on it. When the voltage surges, the electric field intensity increases in the oxide layer, and at certain rates of change, electron-hole pairs form, which increase the conductivity of the gate layer, thus allowing current to flow through the diode.
The MOVs are usually coupled with a Zener diode, and together they form a clamping network. The Zener diode is designed to absorb significant voltage overshoots due to the clamping characteristics of the MOVs. The substantial difference in clamping response between the MOVs and Zener diode is that, the Zener diode offers a much slower clamping response than the MOVs, so it will absorb overshoot voltages that might otherwise cause damage to the circuit.
