The VDIP1 is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit developed by FTDI Chip that has many applications in measurement, control, and communications. It provides a universal serial port solution with both USB and RS-232 interfaces, making it conducive to many complex tasks, such as interfacing to any microcontroller for demonstrating or developing data acquisition systems.

The VDIP1 product is a tool mainly used for serial port interfacing, which is particularly useful in prototype development, general communications and scientific instrument control. It also plays an important role in dynamic data acquisition, real-time control and embedded applications. All of these applications, along with the availability of support for both USB and RS-232, make VDIP1 one of the most versatile and indispensable pieces of development equipment currently available.

To use the VDIP1, the user connects the device to the USB interface of the PC computer, which then obtains additional power supply through the USB cable. In a typical application, the VDIP1 is connected to a sensor or some form of electronic detection device. Then, the embedded devices’ data is collected and transmitted to the computer through the VDIP1. The application can be further extended by connecting the VDIP1 to a microcontroller, connected to sensors such as temperature, pressure, or light detectors.

All the peripheral sensors integrate with the VDIP1, communicating through the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receive/Transfer) protocol. This protocol is sanctioned by the EIA/TIA (Electronic Industries Alliance/Telecommunications Industry Association) and is the most commonly used serial port communication protocol. It consists of the control signals: Receive Data (RD), Transmit Data (TD), Data Terminal Ready (DTR), Data Set Ready (DSR), Clear to Send (CTS) and Request to Send (RTS). The VDIP1’s architecture is based on an onboard FTDI VNC2-128 high-speed USB microcontroller, a well-known design from FTDI Chip. Through the FTDI chip, the VDIP1 can operate with speeds up to 921.6 Kbps.

The system’s reliability is enhanced by the VDIP1’s built in voltage regulator, protection against reverse power connection, protection against transients and power overloads. It is suitable for both battery and power-plugged operated applications and to protect the system against over-voltage, the device has an onboard Protek-E power regulator to protect against all power-related abuse. The system has a power voltage range of 3.3V to 5VPP, with supply current consumption of around 50mA.

The VDIP1 also has a on-board voltage level converters, which allows it to connect to the widely used TTL interface without any external components. This feature not only simplifies the connection process and shortens the loop time, but also eliminates the need for any extra bulky cables or connectors.

Additionally, the VDIP1 features two RJ11 sockets, which enables the user to easily connect two serial devices and allows them to communicate either directly or indirectly via network. Through the use of two 3.5mm stereo jacks, the priority can be set by either connecting a single application or by connecting multiple applications to the VDIP1. This feature allows for easy monitoring of the priority for each application.

The VDIP1 has a wide variety of applications and is one of the most versatile and reliable serial port evaluation and demonstration boards and kits. Its built in features enable it to be used for many complex tasks, such as interfacing with any microcontroller, demonstrating or developing data acquisition systems, or connecting to a variety of peripheral sensors. With the VDIP1’s ability to support both USB and RS-232, it is an invaluable tool that can help take the guesswork out of any development project.
