Varistors, also known as Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), are voltage-dependent resistors that can be used to protect electronic circuits from high-voltage transients such or those caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), electro-magnetic interference (EMI), and lightning surges. They provide a high-impedance impedance for voltage levels below their clamping levels which goes down to low impedance levels for high-voltage transients that exceed the varistor’s clamping voltage.
