PTC Resettable Fuses, also known as polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC), are capable of providing overcurrent protection in circuit systems. A PTC Resettable Fuse such as VLR170U-C30F is designed to protect circuits and system components from damage due to high current flow or short circuit conditions. In the event of an overcurrent, the fuse activates to prevent the flow of current, protecting the circuit and system components from damage.

The VLR170U-C30F is a one time re-set, open construction, radial leaded, thermally activated, positive temperature coefficient fuse. It features high current carry capacity, operational temperature range from -40℃ to 105℃, overload protection from 4 amps to 30 amps, open-circuit voltage of 250 volts and maximum cold resistance of 0.50Ω. Its construction consists of positively temperature responsive conductive polymer, insulated with a topcoat to withstand high-temperature and overpressure.

The fuse works by employing the thermally activated self-healing properties of a positive temperature coefficient polymer material and electrical connections are made to the two gold plated contacts in the perforated top case. The material has conductivity characteristics, which can be controlled by adjusting the polymer content and the load applied. When the current through the fuse exceeds the rated current of the fuse, the temperature of the PTC material increases, and the resistivity of the PTC material increases as well until the current reduces. As a result, the fuse opens and rapidly dissipates the extra current, thus providing an overcurrent protection for the circuit. Once the temperature of fuse decreases, the resistivity of the PTC material decreases and the fuse automatically re-closes, enabling the circuit to operate again normally.
