?Optoisolators - Logic Output: VO2611 Application Field and Working PrincipleOptoisolators are a type of semiconductor device that are capable of transferring electronic signals from a variety of input electrical sources to optically isolated outputs. The ability to isolate input signals from output signals protects the system from interference and offers the highest level of electrical safety. Moreover, optoisolators utilize light as the signal carrier making it suitable for applications such as medical, industrial, automotive, and telecom applications. Optimized for 4-20 mA sensing, the VO2611 optoisolator is a typical example of optoisolators with logic output. This product is developed to meet the electrical isolation requirements of sensing and control applications. The VO2611 contains an AlGaAs red light emitting diode optically coupled to a logic output NPN transistor for signal transfer and isolation. Current transfer ratios (CTR) are come in four values: 250%, 500%, 1000%, and 1500%; VO2611 optoisolator’s CTR is greater than 60% at an input current of 5 mA and it provides an isolation between input and output of 2750Vrms minimum. The VO2611 optoisolator can be used in control systems that require input and output currents and where the isolation of the control signal from the input source is required. One common example of this type of control system is a 4-20 mA transmitter. The input signal’s internal current source generates a 4 mA and a 20 mA range, which is converted by the optoisolator to a voltage. This allows the transferor to connect the output signal to an analog-to-digital converter for input to logic circuits and bus systems. The VO2611 optoisolator operates on a basic principle of necessity for electrical signal isolation. Therefore, its working principle is based on semiconductor structures called photocouplers. Basically, the phototransistor is the element in the optoisolator circuit which amplifies the small current brought in by the LED. When the LED is driven with current, it emits an optical signal which is isolated from the external circuit. This optical signal is reflected by the phototransistor to the output NPN transistor. Thus, this device allows current to flow from input to output and isolates them with minimum leakage currents. In summary, the VO2611 optoisolator is an ideal solution for sensing and control applications. Even though it has a high input resistance, it is usually designed to offer a good isolation of the input and output modulating and driving signals.
